Signs your Control4 system needs attention

  • Touch screens, remotes or the app are slow or drop out
  • Remote access or voice control has stopped working
  • Your original installer has retired, closed or stopped replying
  • Nobody can find the passwords, programming or documentation
  • You want to add rooms, lighting, blinds or cameras to an older system

Control4 software upgrades

Control4 keeps releasing new versions of its operating system. Newer versions bring a refreshed app and interface, security updates and support for current devices. Older versions are being left behind: Control4's cloud services for OS 2 systems, including remote access and voice control, end on 1 November 2026.

What you can upgrade to depends on the controller in your rack and the other equipment on the system. We start by checking the controller model, the software version, the touch screens, keypads and drivers, and the network underneath. You then get a plain-English recommendation: update the software, replace some devices, or replace the controller. Often we can keep much of the existing cabling and equipment.

Replacing old Control4 controllers

The controller is the brain of the system, and older models have a ceiling. For example, an HC-250 cannot run OS 3, and an HC-800 stops at OS 3.3.0, so neither can reach Control4's latest software. Replacing the controller is the way forward.

We fit a current controller, move your project across, update the drivers and test every room. Some older touch screens, keypads and dimmers may also be at the end of their support, and we will tell you which. Where lighting needs replacing, Lutron lighting control is one option. The controller usually lives in an AV rack, so it is a good moment to tidy the rack too. See AV rack builds, tidy-ups and rebuilds.

Taking over a system from another installer

It is common for the company that fitted a system to retire, close or move on. There is no blame attached. We survey the system, tell you what state it is in and take it on, as set out on our support services page.

  1. Survey. We check the hardware, the network, the controller and any faults.
  2. Access. We help you get the system registered and accessible, so it can be supported and, where possible, reached remotely.
  3. Report. You get a written summary of what works, what is outdated and what we recommend.
  4. Fix and update. We repair faults, update software and reprogram what needs changing.
  5. Document. We keep a backup of your programming and settings, so you are not reliant on one person.

Support plans and remote support

Our support plans come in two levels, and prices depend on the size of the system.

  • Standard Care Plan: one on-site health check a year, firmware and software updates, inspection of connected equipment, a short written report, priority phone and email support in business hours, and remote fixes where the system allows.
  • Premium Care Plan: everything in Standard, plus two scheduled on-site visits a year, an engineer on site within 48 hours for critical faults, a direct line to an engineer, full recalibration when needed, backups of all programming and settings, and emergency support including evenings and weekends. Optional remote monitoring and alerts depend on the equipment installed.

Many faults can be fixed by remote support, without waiting for a visit, where the system allows it. If you do not want a contract, we also do one-off repairs, updates and health checks. If something has stopped working today, use Report a Fault.

Questions we get asked

Can you take over a Control4 system you did not install?

Yes. We can survey it, tell you what state it is in and take it on, whether you want a one-off fix or ongoing support.

Do I need a new controller to upgrade?

Not always. It depends on your controller model and software version. Older controllers such as the HC-250 and HC-800 cannot run Control4's latest software, so they need replacing. We confirm this at the survey, before you commit to anything.

Will my system keep working if I do nothing?

Local control from keypads, remotes and touch screens generally carries on. Cloud features such as remote access and voice control are the parts that can stop, and the system will not receive updates.

Do you offer support plans and remote support?

Yes. We offer Standard Care and Premium Care plans, remote support where your system allows it, and one-off help if you would rather not sign up to a contract.

Not sure what you have?

Tell us the rooms, the controller model if you know it, and what is not working. If you are not sure, we will come and look.
