The honest answer is that it depends on the size of the house, the number of rooms and the equipment you choose. This guide gives the ranges we see at Warwick AV and explains what moves a project up or down, so you can plan a budget before anyone visits.
Treat every figure here as indicative, and note that all prices exclude VAT. We can only give a firm price after a survey.
Indicative price ranges
| Project | Indicative range (prices exclude VAT) |
|---|---|
| A single room: a small Control4 processor, a Control4 remote and integration into an existing media room system | From about £5,000 |
| A whole smart home | Up to around £100,000 |
| A fully fitted cinema room, including room build, seating and decor, priced on top of the whole smart home figure (see our home cinema cost guide) | About £20,000 to £150,000 |
All prices on this page exclude VAT. These ranges depend on the kit chosen, the size and layout of the property and how much cabling is needed. A survey and a written quote are needed for an exact figure. Many projects fall between the single room and whole-house figures, because many owners start with the rooms they use most. A fully fitted cinema room is priced on top of the whole smart home figure, not within it.
What drives the cost
Most of the price comes from a handful of choices:
- The number of rooms and zones you want controlled.
- Lighting: how many circuits, and the type of system. See Lutron smart lighting.
- Audio and video: speakers, screens, projectors and how many rooms have them.
- Shading: motorised curtains and blinds, covered under Lutron shading.
- The network: reliable Wi-Fi and networking underpins everything else.
- Cabling and building work, which depends on the age and construction of the house.
- Programming and commissioning time, which grows with the complexity of the system.
The brand and grade of equipment also changes the total, sometimes by a large amount. Two houses of the same size can have very different budgets for this reason.
New build or existing home
A new build or major renovation is the easiest and often the most economical time to add a smart home, because cable can be run before walls are closed. An existing home can still be upgraded. Several of our systems, including Control4 and Lutron RA2 and RA3, can be retrofitted with minimal disruption, but the right approach depends on the house, and we confirm this at the survey.
Starting small and adding later
Control4 is scalable, so a home does not have to be finished on day one. Many owners begin with lighting and music in the rooms they use most and add shading, cinema or security later. The part worth planning from the start is the infrastructure: cabling, the network and the equipment rack. Our AV rack building page explains how we keep this tidy and easy to expand.
A recent example near our Honiley base
We recently installed a full smart home in a family home near our Honiley base. It includes a media room and a sensory room, a space designed for a child with learning difficulties to play in. Projects like this show why a control system should be designed around the people who live in the house, and kept simple for whoever is using the room.
Support after installation
Beyond the installation cost, you can choose an annual support contract, which includes health checks, remote updates and priority callouts. It is optional. Our Control4 upgrades and support page covers it.
How to get an accurate figure
The best route is a free site survey. We look at the house, talk through how you live and what matters most, and then give a written proposal with a price. You can read more about the systems themselves on our Control4 smart homes page.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a single smart room cost?
A single room typically starts from about £5,000. That figure is a small Control4 processor, a Control4 remote and integration into an existing media room system. All prices exclude VAT, and we confirm a price after a survey.
How much does a whole smart home cost?
A whole smart home runs up to around £100,000, depending on the size of the house and the equipment chosen. A fully fitted cinema room is priced on top of that figure. All prices exclude VAT, and we confirm a price after a survey.
Can I do it in stages?
Yes. Many customers start with a few rooms and add more later. We design the cabling and network with future rooms in mind.
Do these prices include VAT?
No. All prices on this page exclude VAT, and they are indicative ranges. We confirm an exact price, with VAT shown, in a written quote after a survey.
Is the survey free?
Yes. We arrange a free, no-obligation visit to look at the project and discuss options.
Are there ongoing costs?
There is no obligation to pay anything after installation. An annual support contract is available if you want health checks, remote updates and priority callouts.
